Genetic Lottery

Genetic Lottery

Description

Genetic Lottery portrayed my personal experience of navigating the healthcare system (for back pain, gastrointestinal, and mental health issues) through a process of self-reflection, recollection of thought, gathering of indexical materials and assemblage. As such, it is a work of autobiography (inspired by my own personal health story). I intended Genetic Lottery to explore a similar narrative style to that used in That Dragon, Cancer, focusing on representing the personal, internal, emotive, and subjective side of navigating a healthcare system using more poetic prose. This project was developed in response to the research question:

“Can taking a person-centric approach to design avoid depersonalisation of ill-health narratives in games?”

With this in mind, the project sought to explore the artistic representation of locations, filtered through the lens of personal subjective experience.

The intentions for this project were to:

  • Explore how to capture and authentically present autobiographical material.

  • Include indexical documents/ material within the game.

  • Enhance narrative content through expressive mechanics.

  • Learn the foundations and process of original audio capture and editing.

  • Learn the foundations of animation (animation retargeting).

It is recommend that you read section 4.3 Genetic Lottery of the thesis for further insight into the project.
